MADAM CJ WALKER

Madam CJ Walker was born in 1867 to freed slaves. She was an African American Entrepreneur, philanthropist, and social and political activist.  She was the first woman and first African American millionaire in America. She started her own line of hair care products that expanded to include cosmetics and then built the business into a national network of "Walker Agents" and certification programs, being the future model for Avon's multi-level marketing system.

MADAM CJ WALKER SCULPTURE

This piece is made with pages from the book "On her own ground, the Life and Times of Madam CJ Walker" by A'Lelia Bundles.

Her coat, fashioned after 1910 models, is made from paper composed of her advertising through the decades.  Her hat is made from painted paper lace and can be removed and worn.  $400
