Recreation of childhood dresses to give to Mum and Sister

Apple dress made with paper printed from a scan of the original fabric and gingham ribbon. Middle dress made from road maps of France with hand painted gouache stripes. Blue dress made from tiny cut outs of roses applied to gouache painted maps of France with lace trim. Doll sized. 2021

Recreation of Mum's traditional Finnish Costume

This dress was made from pages of the epic Finnish folklore story "Kalevala". The skirt is painted to represent traditional woven patterns, the vest has a lace up ribbon front and the pouch is heavily embroidered.  The medallion necklace is hand cut and illustrated Shrinky Dink and the skirt is sewn from strips of satellite images representing locations the whole family has settled.  Child sized. 2023

Birthday present for Wife

This dress was made from pages of a shared beloved book "Rumo and his Miraculous Adventures" by Walter Moers. By request, the dress also includes the Rhine River in Germany, poppies and the color blue.  I was given free reign with which illustrations to include and how to decorated the pages. This dress was made from contemporary maps of New Mexico, painted and vintage sheet music and applique flowers. It is trimmed with velvet ribbon.

Gift for Granddaughter

This dress is made with vintage maps of Los Angeles, paper lace and satin ribbon. It is covered in paper butterflies and the pocket is Sara Dykman's hand drawn map depicting her 10,000 mile journey on bicycle, following their migration.

Honor Mother, Father and Place

This series was commissioned to honor the client's parents as well as his connection to Northern New Mexico.  He sent me boxes of family ephemera to incorporate in the pieces. The first collection includes his father's chew tin, a bar brand pin, and a photo of his father as a child. The jeans are made from gouache painted and double stitched maps of Oregon. The jacket was made from gouache painted play script pages and embroidered. Child sized. 2022

The second garment honors his mother and her childhood in Kansas. Made with collage (including a vintage photo of Oberlin KS, her home town), hand illustrated roses, satin ribbon, a calling card from the 1800's and Cinq Point de Venise Heritage stitching. Child sized. 2022

The third garment honors his years as a large animal vet in Northern NM. Made with vintage cuff links and handkerchief from his collection. The dress yolk is made from a Doug West painting, embellished with jewel brads and chain stitch embroidery.  The dress is trimmed with embroidery and tissue paper.
